Pelikan Level L5 - Time for new impulses

With its Level L5 innovation, the traditional trade mark of Pelikan has entered new territory and its technological novelty is not just restricted to refilling. Together with the yellow design/yellow circle, Pelikan has developed a modern range of writing instruments which is distinguished because of its superior finish, its functionality and - above all - its unusual design.

Never before have social circumstances been so obscure, so complex and hence so hard to understand as they are nowadays. At the same time, however, the desire of people to understand what is happening around them is growing stronger. The "transparency" of things is not just a notion purely restricted to matters of design. Whether consumer items, architecture or fashion: the glamorous, colourful 1980s are past history now and in retrospect they seem to have been cheap and overladen. They have been followed - true to the rhythmic change of the styles and trends - by years of asceticism, purism and natural aesthetics in the 1990s. Transparency could thus mean "less is more" or "omission is visibility" in the forthcoming decade, since a transparent object allows the viewer to "see through", it unveils its construction and hence its function. Transparency reveals content and focuses on the usefulness of a product.

This tendency has been confirmed in many products, but also in architecture and fashion. Some good examples of this are the transparent materials of Issey Mijake, the G-shock of Casio or Norman Foster's plans to reconstruct the Berlin Reichstag with a glass dome. The fascination and playful elegance of the technology employed have an important formal role to play. Transparency makes it impossible to hide anything or to pretend since the details, the links, the catches, the hinges, the seams or the glued joints are visible and require therefore more care and honesty.

There is one more reason why transparent products are so much in vogue: They are more self-evident as they blend more easily with their surroundings. They do not obstruct the view with loud colours and obtrusive forms but create space for one's own thoughts. This makes transparency a desirable feature in all fields of development.
