Are the Red pillars on the left brighter than the ones right hand side?

No, in both cases we are dealing with the same shade of Red, although the pillars on the right might seem darker to spectators.

Why do the Red pillars on the left seem brighter than the ones on the right?

In the Circle of Colour both of these shades are exactly across from each other, making them as far apart as possible. When two colours have this relationship to each other, one speaks of a complementary contrast. When both of these colours meet and are viewed by the eye, they strongly influence each other's appearance. The same colour appears darker on a bright background (picture right) than if it were on a dark background (picture left).

If the colour Green were to be replaced by White on the left pillars, the complementary contrast would lose its effect. Both of the red shades look the same. This example shows: A colour is always influenced by the other colours in its environment.
