Idea no. 1: "Clapping“

When it starts getting louder in the classroom, I clap to a certain rhythm. The children then lay everything out of their hands and start clapping with me. Then I stop clapping and hold my arms/hands horizontally away from my body, I interrupt the clapping – the clapping stops. The children stop clapping, as well (Hands/arms are standing outwards in the air). They copy my movements. Now everyone is as quiet as a mouse and the peacefulness is brought back to the classroom.

Idea no. 2: "The Quiet Fish “

In work phases, in which a quiet surrounding is necessary, I hang the Quiet Fish onto the blackboard: The Quiet Fish is a large, laminated fish. I explained to my class beforehand that a fish is a very quiet animal and that fishes communicate very quietly under water. While the children are working, they can communicate with each other by tapping each other on the shoulder or by speaking quietly. Should anyone get too loud, he/she can be reminded by pointing at the Quiet Fish. I have also prepared some small Quiet Fishes (the big fish laminated onto small cards). If a child cannot keep quiet, I go up to him/her and lay a small Quiet Fish beside him/her. At the end of the work phase, we reflect on the peacefulness during the work phase and on the children’s work habits. Those children, who got a Quiet Fish card laying next to them on their table may only give the fish back after having reflected on their behaviour during the work phase and setting themselves a target for the next work phase.

Idea no. 3: "The Voiceless Jule“

In phases during class, in which the children’s concentration begins to fall noticeably and they start fidgeting, I like playing the game „The Voiceless Jule“. The rules of the game are very easy. The kids are not aloud to speak. Only nonverbal communication is permitted, which means, the children are aloud to communicate by using facial expressions and gestures. It is an easy game of dice that I have developed in class together with my students. I would also suggest that everyone who likes this game should create their own version together with their students. It will help the children to find an easier access to the game. In our game, we just drew round game fields (from start to finish). Some fields are white, some are green and others are red. We take turns throwing the dice. On white fields nothing happens, on red ones you lose one turn and on green fields you can go one field forward. The rules can be adjusted individually. In our game, you can also get thrown out of the game and have to go back to the start field.

Before playing, we agree on a certain play time. The children adapt very well to the peaceful play times.
