Halloween is an abbreviation of the phrase "All Hallows eve" - in other words, the evening before "All Hallows". It is the equivalent of the German holiday known as "Allerheiligen". This day is dated November 1st and is regarded as the change of the Celtic year. In their culture it symbolises the night in which the death god known as Samhain would collect the souls of the dead. It was also during this time in which ghosts and demons returned to earth. To scare them away, the Celts would carve masks made using turnips in which they would place candles. Afraid of being alone, they would also wander from house to house. It was during the 19th century that the tradition spread out to America. It was here, where pumpkins were used as opposed to turnips. Up to today, these are still emptied and carved with scary motifs.
The American Halloween celebrations started to grow more and more in popularity creating furthermore the wish for people to gather peacefully. This is why they invented the phrase "trick our treat" and sent their children from door to door to ask for sweets.

Through time, Halloween has become a very popular celebration. It has even started coming on in Germany over the recent years.
