Usually, the topic of weather is very popular among students, as they are able to find out more about their direct environment by relatively simple means. One target is the observation and documentation of the current weather situation. Such a project can find an interdisciplinary approach in art class. Creating a little weather station, for example, which can be operated by the children and on which the students can document the weather conditions on a daily base, is one part of it. In order to provide your students the possibility to work on their weather station independently, we offer you the right "measuring instruments" in single parts and as complete download templates. The focus lies on the documentation of the weather phenomena, which the children have already observed so far. Clouds and the weather condition which stand in close connection to each other, the direction of the wind and the temperature. For a better overview, all measuring instruments can be glued beneath each other (weather station) and enable all students to observe the current weather situation. All in all, the weather station offers a building block for art class that can be seen as a starting point for discussing the topic of weather.

Our download templates, white colored paper, a pair of scissors, round head fasteners, Pelikan markers Colorella duo or colored pencils, a thermometer.

Appointing a location of the weather station

First, the students can mark the approximate location of the weather station on a map of Germany. For this, we would like to offer you our download templates including an ordinary map and a chart in which the date of each weather measurement can be filled in.

Now the "measuring instrument" is ready to be built together. For this purpose, you can either use our symbol wheel or the empty one and draw your own symbols on it. Cut out the wheel and the arrow and punch a hole in the markings.

Finally, you can paint the arrow red (e. g. with Pelikan Colorella duo markers). Then place the arrow on top of the wheel with both holes positioned directly over each other, stick a round head fastener through and bend it apart on the backside.

Clouds and the Weather Condition

Our symbols are suitable to determine the weather condition and the production of clouds correctly. Certainly, it is possible to let the children create their own cloud symbols and have them write them on the measuring wheel. Our symbols can measure the following weather conditions: Sun/Clouds, partly clouded, heavy clouds, fog, rain, storm and snow. As a map legend, we offer you this chart as a template to download, in which you can alternatively fill in your own symbols.

Building together the anemometer

Alike the wind measuring instrument, cut out the wheel and the arrow of the anemometer. The arrow is colored in red and fastened to the wheel with a round head fastener.

Temperature

Apart from our templates, you will also need a thermometer to document the temperature. For this purpose, read the temperature off the thermometer and adjust the arrow on the temperature measuring instrument and write in the chart. The measuring instrument enables you to read the weather of the day before again one day later and to explore whether the temperature has dropped, risen or stayed the same. The construction is the same as with the wind measuring instrument. In addition, the single temperature ranges can be marked in color. For a better orientation, color the temperature ranges onto the template of the map legend in the respective colors. Finally, the temperatures can be documented on the template "temperature curve". It will show a weekly overview of the different daily temperatures.
