Mothers’ Day: Heart-shaped box

Home-made presents for Mothers’ Day are very popular. But even if the present is shop-bought, for example, perfume, the right packaging can make a personal impression. The shape of a heart is very suitable for this purpose, especially when the form can be conserved with paper maché and a balloon and converted into a box.

Here's how:

  1. Prepare by ripping the newspaper into strips approx. 2 fingers in width. You will need to cover the balloon about five times. Paste the blown balloon with wallpaper paste and cover with the paper strips. Repeat this process several times. Make sure that the strips overlap each other generosly.

  1. Leave the balloon to dry well.
  2. Once the paper maché has dried, burst the balloon with the needle and pull out.

  • Make a mark along the middle of the balloon with a pencil and cut open with the scissors.
  • Cut the card into pieces approx. 4 cm wide.
  • Stick to the inside of the top rim of one of the halves. The other half will be placed on top of this. The stiff lining lends the object stability and prevents the halves from falling apart.
  • Paint the outside of the whole heart and the inside of the lid with the Plaka-glazing in red. This varnish gives the heart a beautiful gloss.
  • Stick the crepe paper to the inside of the bottom of the heart by cutting the paper to the correct size and applying a little adhesive to the edges. This will make an attractive underlay for the Mothers’ Day present and keep it in position.
  • To finish, write a dedicaton on the heart with the Wonderliners, for example,”all my love on Mothers’ Day”. Place the present inside and close the heart. Wrap the ribbon around the heart and tie a decorative bow.
