Pelikan's colour for this Winter is Magenta red. The now very popular "Pelikan circle of colour" not only shows us mixtures resulting from the combination of Primary colours, but also Complementary colours. These colours are the ones that are across from each other on the circle. When brought together they form a complementary contrast.

When a colour that is complementary to another one is chosen, the maximum effect of a contrast is most evident. This is a feature that is ideal for Art classes. We will try to make the effect of contrasts clearer in the following example:

A car is driving on a road in the countryside with lots of bends and turns. The car is green and as a result of green dominance in its surrounding environment it isn't very noticeable.
The car is to be made more noticeable on the picture. To do so, we use our knowledge of complementary contrasts. In our example greens complementary colour would be Magenta red.

Pelikan opaque colours deliver bright intense colour tones. Especially primary colours prove ideal for teaching about the theory of colour. With the help of a complementary contrast one can create powerful expressive paintings.

On the second picture the bright Red car is noticed straight away. The Green surroundings were painted using the primary colours Yellow and Cyan-Blue from a Pelikan K12 paint set. Green was the Colour of Spring 2002 on our Teachers pages.

In the upper part of the picture, the colours were brightened with the use of Chinese White and darkened in the lower areas with the use of Black. Pelikan offers a special service to advise on this subject: from Pelikan.
