Christmas lanterns

Perhaps this situation sounds familiar to you: You have an empty cheese box that you don’t want to throw away because you would like to make a nice lantern out of it – but just how do you make one again? The Pelikan Teachers’ Info will show you how!

Easily made comforting light – if you would like to see what the lamps look like in the dark, please scroll down to the end of the crafting instructions!

You need:

Empty cheese boxes (round or oval including the lid, e.g. from a Camembert), transparent paper (strong), PLAKA paints in the colors of the transparent paper, a paintbrush, glue, a tea candle, a cardboard roll e.g. from an empty roll of toilet paper, string and a pair of scissors.

What to do:

  1. First, paint the entire box with the PLAKA paints and let them dry thoroughly. If you like it colorful, then paint several boxes in different colors. The high opacity of the PLAKA paint provides an easy painting of large surfaces using only a single coat of paint.
  2. Then cut an approx. 2cm wide stripe off of the toilet paper roll. Glue it in the middle of the bottom part of the cheese box. That is where you set the candle later on, so it doesn’t fall over.

The cardboard ring prevents the tea candle from sliding around.
  1. Now measure the piece of transparent paper you will need. In order to determine the ambit, we used the following trick: Place the string all along the inside edge of the cheese box, until you reach the starting of your string again. Give your string 2cm extra length for the gluing edge. Now you’ve got the exact ambit of your box. You will need it when cutting out the lantern paper. The height of your lamp can be chosen individually, then cut out the rectangular piece of transparent paper.

Determine the inner ambit of the transparent paper with a piece of string, choose the height individually.
  1. Cut a rather large hole in the lid of the box, so that the heat of the candle can escape. Then glue the transparent paper along the inside edge of the lid.

  1. As next step, glue the transparent paper together along the gluing strap of the edge that runs lengthwise down the lantern.

First, the transparent paper is glued together on the lid, then along the edge that runs lengthwise down the lantern.

After it is dry, set a tea candle inside the small cardboard ring you cut out and glued inside the bottom part, in the beginning. As final step, all you got to do is place the top of the lamp (=the lid of the box with the transparent paper) on the bottom part.

Attention:

Please never leave the lantern unattended when in use, and always keep flammable objects in a safe distance to the lamp! This lantern is not a toy, therefore you should never leave children alone with the lantern! Before leaving the room, always blow out the tea candle. Before blowing out the candle, carefully take off the top of the lantern.

Wie versprochen: So stimmungsvoll sehen die Lampen in unterschiedlicher Höhe bei Dunkelheit aus.
