Movable animals: Colorful parrot

It’s not always easy to create effective lessons within only few steps. Especially first and second graders are easily motivated by creative ideas to do cutting and paintwork.

Moreover the fine motor skills of children can be supported by such exercises and they hereby receive a playful introduction into the world of mechanics. By gluing several animals beside each other, you can even perform simple motion studies.

The colorful parrot can even sit on a bar. Place the parrot on a cork and hang the holding wire in a slightly windy area. Now you only have to be careful not to let the parrot fly away!

Thanks to the revised wings of the previous model, the parrot can now be set on a bar and flap its wings.

You need:

Water-color paint box K12, paintbrushes size 10 with long and short bristles, Pelikan Colorella duo fiber-tip pens, a sketch block, the download template "Movable animals", a pair of scissors, a pencil and round head fasteners. For the parrot, you will need: a cork, florist’s wire and all-purpose glue.

And this is how you make it:

  1. Print out the download template "colorful parrot". Attention: Head, body and wings will be needed twice and so the parts also exist in mirror-image!
  2. Carefully cut out all parts needed along the lines.
  3. Color all parts of the parrot with the opaque paints. They will make the parrot shine brightly and will give it a distinctive look.
  4. Glue the parrot (head + body) together and place the wings between the two body parts on the marked spot. Tip: The head can also be attached with a round head fastener later on (marked spot). This way it can be shifted later as well.
  5. Shape the florist’s wire to a U-shape. Be careful to let the ends point to the inside. Stick the ends of the wire in the cork from both sides.
  6. With a knife, place an approx. 0.5 cm deep cut in the cork.
  7. Glue the parrot with its feet in the cut.
  8. Find a nice place to hang up the parrot and enjoy its beautiful sight!
