The mystery of the vanished pumpkin

A pumpkin, that just disappears? You don’t believe it? Then see for yourself: Hold your left eye shut and with your right eye, set your sight on the star of the magic wand. As you draw nearer to the wand with your nose, the pumpkin will vanish at the distance of about 20 cm.

You can download the pumpkin template. The plus here: You can color the template on your own, e. g. with Colorella duo fiber-tip pens.

Explanation:

Of course, the pumpkin doesn’t really disappear, you just can’t see it anymore! Just like it is with all organs, the retina is provided with blood. Together with the optic nerve the blood vessels come through the retina at a certain point, which is called the blind spot or the Discus Nervi Optici. Here, which you also call the Papilla, there are no light receptors which are responsible for our eye-sight. Normally, the hole in our visual field can be equalized by our brain and the completing image of our other eye. Under certain circumstances, as e. g. in our demonstration, it can be that there aren’t enough colors in the ambient area for the completion and the pumpkin disappears. Of course it also works the other way around. We have prepared a mirror-image version of this test in our download template. By the way: The blind spots of both eyes are on different places. This way, one eye can always equalize the blind spot of the other eye – if it doesn’t happen to be Halloween!
