Product description

The Maki-e Unique Collection

No 3: Milky Way

Raden is a traditional Japanese decorative craft for lacquer ware and woodwork. “Milky Way” is made with particles from the abalone shell which originates in the Sea of Japan. In the production process, the abalone shell is placed on the ground and flattened with a hard stone into very thin sheets. Then the most beautiful parts are cut into small pieces and affixed one by one to the coating of lacquer which is already on the body of the fountain pen . . . until it looks like a sky full of stars. Afterward the pen is again coated with lacquer and the surface is polished. This process is repeated several times. As a final finishing process another coating of lacquer is applied and highly polished.
