Blinking Owl

Are you feeling watched? That's because you are! But our blinking owl can do even more: It can open its eyes all the way the close them again immediately. It's a canny idea for inexperienced crafters or beginners in crafting, as the owl is made in so few steps. Crafting professionals will enjoy working on this project, as well, because the eyes of the owl can be used for other animals, too.

This is what you need:
Download templates, Pelikan colored pencils or Colorella Duo markers, black fineliner, white printing paper or - even better: white colored paper, a pair of scissors, a cutter, Pelifix glue, K12 opaque paintbox (black opaque paint), long-bristled paintbrush size 10.

It's as easy as this:

  1. Print out all the templates on a piece of white colored paper.
  2. [Base plate]: Begin with the base plate. Cut these out and paint the eyes in a color of your choice. Draw additional black lines as "veins". It will make them look even more real.

By drawing veins, the eyes will look even more real.
  1. [Picture plate]: Cut out the eyes on the picture plate. Use Pelikan colored pencils to color the owl and the background the way you imagine it to be.
[Crafting Professionals]: If you would like to create an animal other than an owl, just use our "white picture plate". The outlines of the owl have been omitted, so that you can draw you own favorite animal around the eyes (crocodile, bear, or the like).
Instead of the owl, experienced crafters can draw a different animal around the eyes (white picture plate, right picture).
  1. [Slider]: To open and close the eyes, the slider is needed. Dark eyelids come out even better. Therefore, we recommend using black opaque paint. As you can also make different animals out of the picture plate, alternative designs are imaginable here, too. (For example, green eyelids for the crocodile). The slider is universally usable. After painting it, let it dry thoroughly and cut it out along the given lines. The inside window must be cut out, as well, as the eyes should appear on this spot.
The slider can be painted in black or in a different color.
  1. [Construction]: Now follows the construction of the blinking owl. For this purpose, place the picture plate, the slider and the base place on top of each other. The slider must lie in the center between the flaps and the picture plate.
Left: The slider and the base plate lie behind the picture plate. Right: Completed blinking owl

Now glue is applied onto the four gluing flaps of the picture plate, bend them down and glue them tightly onto the base plate (see markings). When gluing, the slider remains in the center and is only affixed by the glue flaps - this way, it cannot slip out on the left or the right side.

  1. [Function]: After having completed the owl and the glue has dried, you can try out the blinking eyes. For this purpose, press the slider of the crafted owl downwards. Work slowly, so that the eyes are halfway closed, at first, then completely shut. The eye-slider can be pulled upwards immediately again, to abruptly open the eyes. This is a friendly way to scare spectators!
The owl can blink its eyes, but in doing so, it can also scare spectators a lot, too!
