No 10: Paper Cranes

Origami is the art of folding paper into amazing sculptures, and the paper crane is one of the traditional symbols in the Japanese origami culture. Today, it is also considered as a symbol of peace, and a multitude of folded paper cranes represents the hope for peace in just as many countries. On this fountain pen, the cranes are combined with the colorful Temari, traditional Japanese balls. In many areas in Japan, parents who wish for health and longevity of their children, display the Temari balls during the traditional Japanese doll festival on March 3rd. The balls show a pattern that is a combination of a triangle, a star, and a straight line which is believed to create protective powers - like an amulet. This fountain pen is drawn with the Togidashi-Taka-Maki-e technique.

The Togidashi-Maki-e technique

In this technique, the rare Japanese lacquer Urushi is applied in a multitude of layers which are polished many times. The design is drawn first with tracing paper and then with colored lacquer onto the surface of the fountain pen. It is then sprinkled with a multitude of lacquer-layers or gold and silver dust.

The Taka Maki-e technique

The artist mixes charcoal powder or gold powder into the lacquer, so that the pattern of the design is raised above the surface and a three-dimensional effect is created: If your thumb glides over the surface, you will feel the difference.
